Why a Scarf?
People have been wearing scarves for thousands of years. Headscarf, kerchief, shawl, or bandana – the scarf has many forms and uses. It protects us from the elements, but it also makes a fashion statement and helps create our personal identity.
Scarves have been worn by football fans in Great Britain since the early 1900s. They were initially worn to protect fans from harsh weather, but football scarves quickly evolved into something more: identification. As the sport became more popular, the scarf adopted club colours and gave fans a way to clearly show their allegiance, like a banner.
Something magical happens when, in unison, fans sing their club’s song, hands raised above their heads with scarves outstretched - building the visually astonishing “Scarf Wall”. It’s become the most recognized symbol in football, seen as the universal sign of solidarity by a club’s supporters.
The ING DIRECT Orange Scarf was designed to reflect what the football scarf has come to represent. Its vibrant orange and deep blue, with the regal mighty lion, honour the bank’s Dutch origins. The overlapping argyle pattern creates a sense of texture, depth, and movement which is meant to represent our focus on forward banking. By wearing your Orange Scarf, you are showing everyone that you are a part of our exciting movement. Get ready to turn heads wherever you go!
